Older people speak out about care crisis

23 June 2017

Members of the City and Hackney Older People's Reference Group spoke out about the crisis in social care at a special summit meeting on 22 June.

The audience heard how older people are bearing the brunt of squeezed budgets in both the NHS and local government, while care homes are closing in unprecedented numbers and councils are increasingly unable to afford home care.

Speakers included Dot Gibson, the secretary of the National Pensioners’ Convention, local GP Dr Coral Jones and Age UK East London chief executive Jane Caldwell.

There were also a series of powerful contributions from the floor from local older people who spoke movingly of the difficult situations they had faced as a result of cuts and funding restrictions on social care.
